Welcome

Community - Culture - Recreation

Welcome to Historic Onancock School, we’re glad you are here. We are excited to be celebrating the 103rd Anniversary in 2024. Onancock High School opened its doors to the first class of students in September of 1921, and was dedicated on March 5th, 1922. Many children passed through these halls in over 64 years of operation. While this building is no longer bustling Onancock High, we honor the memories and history while continuing on as a vibrant community and cultural center serving Virginia’s Eastern Shore residents and visitors.

Today our classrooms are filled with creative artists, makers, entrepreneurs, clubs, several nonprofits and a museum. These are working studios with creators that are open seasonally, many with their own hours that revolve around their work. Please check our Artists and Businesses pages for individual schedules or to make appointments. Our 13 acres of outdoor green space is a hub of activity including a playground, picnic area, nature trail, creekside observation deck, soccer field, disc golf course and open space for exercising dogs and their humans. We also provide a large events space, The Gallery -a place for classes, meetings, programs, civic and social events, art openings and music. This is also a favorite venue for private rentals such as weddings, showers, birthdays and family gatherings.

HOS Mission - to connect, inspire and embrace our diverse community through artistic, educational, social & recreational means to sustain our legacy for future generations.
